Question:
“I am feeding my baby and i would like to stop now but she is more demanding and cries lot . pls do suggest way to change her behavior.”
Answer:
This was a question sent to me from one of client .
Most of the kids gradually leave the breast feeding once they get the supplement food apart from milk after a year, however some kids may want to drink milk even when they have started having food due to the immense bonding . Since your kid is 14 months it might already have milk teeth and as a mother i can understand the pain you are going through.
a) Use neem paste and see if this stops her breast feeding as it will have a bitter taste and most of the kids dont like that and they may stop feeding milk.
b) Provide an increased quantity of supplement food apart from mothers milk
c) Use a bottle to give mother milk
d) Restrict your kid by reducing the sessions gradually but not suddenly.
e) Tell her that “You are a big girl now, and big girls don’t breastfeed”.
f) When you slowly reduce the session you might undergo condition in which breasts become overly full of milk or engorgement to stop the pain, crush the cabbage leaves with a rolling pin if the leaves do not accommodate to the shape of your breast. Wrap the cabbage leaves around the breast and leave on for about 20 minutes. Twice daily is enough. It is usual to use the cabbage leaf treatment two or three times or less. You can use the cabbage leaves after each feeding and leave them on until they wilt.
For many children, the longer they are breastfed, the more difficult it is for them to give it up, especially after they are a year old. They like the protective feeling of being close to their mother, especially during the night feed. Since breastfeeding for them is an emotional attachment, you should ensure that you gradually reduce your feeds. They may cry a little at the time of the feed, but if you are there with them giving them all the love and affection they want, they will feel less insecure and upset.
As you know that mothers milk is the best diet for your kid, dont follow any of the above steps if you kid is sick as kids need mothers milk to fight any fever or sickness.
There is normally three ways, either of which mothers choose to wean their babies -
1) Abrupt weaning
2) Gradual weaning
3) Partial weaning (night weaning).
Abrupt Weaning: Stopping to breastfeeding a child all of a sudden or abruptly is often found to be difficult for both the mother and the child. Sometimes mothers have to take such decisions when they fall acutely ill or for other medical reasons. It is important to consult a doctor under such circumstances.
Gradual Weaning: This is the best and the most preferred way to stop breastfeeding a baby. In gradual weaning, the mother reduces one time breastfeeding of the baby and substitutes it with another form of nourishment. She may adhere to this policy every alternate day, before increasing the frequency and finally terminating breastfeeding altogether.
Partial Weaning: This happens when the mother plans to keep one or two nursing sessions in one day depending upon her convenience. The nursing sessions can be slowly reduced as the baby grows up and substituted with other nourishments.
Finally a stage will come, when the baby is fully ready to be weaned away from breastfeeding.
Natural or Child-led Weaning : This particular process is one when the child decides that he or she is ready to do away with momma’s nursing and this could be abrupt or gradual. This does not signify that the mother cannot coax or distract the child while a breastfeeding session is on to take the child off the habit of breastfeeding.
Substituting Breast Milk with Other Baby Nourishment’s It is important that your decision to stop breastfeeding your baby is taken as per your own convenience and not under somebody else pressurization. Further, you can use baby products like sippy cups, baby bottle, etc. to easily wean your baby. Also introduce other nourishment substitutes like fruits, cereals, etc. while cutting down upon the number of baby breastfeeding sessions.
Hope this suggestions would help you. If you do know other ways please feel free to share them here.
