Happy Father’s Day | Do we need a separate day to celebrate Father’s Day in India ?

by Little Gems on June 24, 2009

Is India moving towards the western culture ? Unlike western countries we stay with our parents, live together by taking care of them even after marriage, recently everything has changed. Many old people are seen on the streets left alone without any care and you can see an increased  old age homes all around India.  However having a separate day like father’s day and mother’s day does not make much sense if you see this change in our culture.

Last month Little Gems announced mother’s day offer to promote our brain stimulation training kit as we received many inquiry regarding mother’s day offers, to our surprise the whole world was talking about Mother’s day. Lot of news buzz  about mothers day celebrations seen on Indian websites and TV news channels. These celebration’s are very new to our culture.

To my surprise people in India, celebrated father’s day by expressing gratitude and love for Papa ( Dad). They also payed tribute to their heavenly dad (Shraadh). Children surprise their dad with father’s day greeting cards, flowers and other gifts of love to their dad to show their affection. Dining in restaurants or going out for picnic or movie is another common way of celebrating Fathers Day in India. Even Schools conducted cultural programs to celebrate father’s day.

May be this was started with a marketing motive to boost some product sales however,  it is remarkable to note that the idea of observing a day in honor of fathers has been appreciated by Indians to a large extent as we respect every culture and their ideas of expression.

As we know that every celebration is not only meant to have fun but to also  spend quality time with our children and instill in them noble values and manners.Though we accept and celebrate this day the following question was seen  in many indian forums and discussion boards

“Do we need a separate day to celebrate Father’s Day in India ?”

My personal opinion as a father, son and a grand uncle besides various other relationships, is that we do not need any of these to reinforce our affection and attachment with our parents. My 92 year old father and 38 year old son live with me and we run a very functional and happy bachelor home. This is possible because we care for each other deeply and we do not need special days to remember our attachments.

My sister and her husband looked after their parents and inlaws with great affection and care and I still remember my mother being so happy to be with them at every possible opportunity. I have many other cases within my family to share including a case of my male cousins looking after their parents till the very end.

Such days are perhaps needed in homes and countries where old people are sent off to old people's homes.
